Factory air suspension is a nice feature—until it starts giving you problems. With this 2014 Ram 1500, we took a different direction: remove the troublesome air-ride setup and give the truck a fresh start with conventional suspension and a 4-inch Rough Country lift.

We also installed chrome wheels, Nitto tires, and a PowerStop brake package. What started as a suspension problem became an opportunity to change the whole look of the truck.

Replacing the Factory Air Suspension

The main job was getting this Ram away from its aging factory air suspension. Instead of continuing to repair that system, we removed it and converted the truck to a conventional suspension setup with a 4-inch Rough Country suspension lift.

That addressed the reason for the build and gave us the taller stance for the new wheel-and-tire package.

If you’re considering a Ram 1500 air suspension conversion, this is a good example to bring up when you call. We can talk through what’s happening with your truck, how you use it, and whether a conversion makes sense for your situation.

22×12 Chrome Edge Wheels and 33×12.50R22 Nitto Tires

With the suspension changed, we installed 22×12-inch chrome Edge wheels and 33×12.50R22 Nitto tires.

The chrome wheels give this Ram a bold look that works with the truck’s existing styling. Paired with the 4-inch lift, the wider wheels and new tires make a noticeable difference from the original setup.

These are the main pieces that brought the build together:

  • Suspension: Factory air suspension removed; converted to conventional suspension
  • Lift: 4-inch Rough Country
  • Wheels: 22×12-inch chrome Edge
  • Tires: 33×12.50R22 Nitto
  • Brakes: PowerStop Z36 Truck & Tow package

PowerStop Z36 Brake Upgrade

We also gave the brakes attention, installing a PowerStop Z36 Truck & Tow brake package with new pads and drilled-and-slotted rotors.

That made the brakes part of the project alongside the suspension, wheels, and tires. For anyone planning a similar truck build, it’s worth discussing the condition of the existing brakes when putting the package together.

Finishing the Job

Once the new components were installed, we performed a wheel alignment to bring the setup into alignment specifications.

This Ram left the build with a conventional suspension system, a taller stance, chrome wheels, Nitto tires, and new brake components. The biggest change went beyond appearance: the factory air suspension that prompted the project was gone.
